"Surface" in SF Gate

The daughter and niece of painters, gallery owner Andrea Schwartz left her native Texas to study painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, graduating in 1977. 
“I made abstract oil-on-canvas paintings,” she says. “I had a studio for a year after school and was painting, but I discovered it was easier for me to be in the business end than alone. But that’s helped me understand the artists — how difficult the work can be.”
Her Andrea Schwartz Gallery, founded in 1982, has “always really been about painting more than anything.” For its late-summer show, “Surface,” three San Francisco artists new to the gallery have been brought together: Each artist works in painterly ways, yet stretches the gallery beyond its typical offerings.
