John Belingheri Reviewed in SF Gate

A pattern emerges when it comes to the work of Bay Area artist John Belingheri, on exhibit in his seventh solo show at Andrea Schwartz Gallery. 

Bubbles, curlicues, oblongs and triangles recur in the paintings, picking up at various times the beat of Gustav Klimt’s alluring backdrops, the cosmopolitan cool of a Midcentury Modern decorative motif, or the bold shout-out to nature in Hawaiian tapa cloth. There’s a touch of obsessiveness to the painter’s process, as well: Belingheri paints and sands the surface of his canvases over and over, laboring in search of a certain layered, well-worked appearance. 

The artist, who earned his master’s in fine arts from Brigham Young University, gets there eventually through “haphazard marks and mistakes” and plenty of studio time. “It’s almost like you’re babysitting,” he has said. “Any of these paintings might want to do something, and you need to be there when it happens.”
