Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce a two-person exhibition by Cara Barer and Alex Couwenberg.
“The images are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted, and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted.” – Cara Barer
Cara Barer transforms books by sculpting, dyeing, and photographing the final sculptures to give them new life. In her most recent body of work, Barer responds to her surroundings and the four classical elements, earth, air, fire, and water. Barer also explores the concept of a fifth element, aether, which she interprets as the element that the universe and the spirit within all humanity is comprised of. By deconstructing her subject matter and removing recognizable forms in her photographs, Barer leaves her work open to interpretation.
“My work is a product of the world that surrounds me. It functions as a snapshot of my visual landscape.” – Alex Couwenberg
Alex Couwenberg pulls inspiration from his environment in the form of culture, music, surfing, fashion, and architecture, to name a few. With a focus on process, Couwenberg allows the work to happen organically, with spontaneous reactions towards moves and passes made within the painting. Without a roadmap, each work becomes a unique snapshot, capturing the world around him at a moment in time.
