Sarah Williams' upbringing in the Midwest influenced her art in a major way. Although she believes that her connection to small town farm culture plays an integral role in the way she approaches her art, she also believes that her artwork can speak to people from a variety of backgrounds, with each viewer bringing their own vantage point to the works. They could be from similar environments and feel comforted by the energy, or perhaps are reminded of cross country road trips. For some, these desolate nightscapes may represent somewhere that the viewer hopes to never find themselves alone. Whatever the case may be, Williams' work prompts the audience to draw upon the character and identity of their regional home when approaching her art.
"Strong emotions can be prompted by a place. Over time, ways of life shape and define the people and the spaces in which they live. I am drawn to areas and structures that show character acquired from the history and memory of the people that formed that environment."
