Mitch Jones was born in Washington D.C. but grew up in the beach towns south of Los Angeles known as the South Bay, which included Torrance, Redondo, Hermosa, and Manhattan Beach. He did all the typical things a youngster would do growing up near the ocean from surfing and boogie boards to competitive swimming and even being certified as a teenage lifeguard. "I believe the carefree lifestyle I lived in my youth, allowed me the freedom to express myself later as a mature artist."
Mitch Jones works in oil and mixed media and uses old papers and documents in his work. "I start by giving my canvases a 'skin' of paper for structural support. The use of old papers and documents is a means to visually drive home repeated themes and remind us that the future contains the past. We are a society that does not seem to look far beyond the surface of things. I want my art to speak to that. We must look beyond the surface in order to survive."
He is also inspired greatly by music. The groove in music is achieved through repeated rhythmic progressions and provides him with endless inspiring iconography. "I like to think that my work grows and evolves like a piece of music."
Mitch Jones's work is included in numerous private, corporate/public collections, as well permanent museum collections.
