These recent sculptures represent a range of formal expression, and ultimately an extension of my previous focus working primarily in stone. By using metals singularly, as well as integrated with stone, this approach offers an entryway to new ambiguities and formal complexities, an inventive field in which to explore unique interrelationships. The tensile strength of steel and aluminum allows for a broadening of the formal vocabulary offered by stone through cantilevering in particular. The dynamics of these pieces open up into space in new ways. The additive process is now invited into what was purely a subtractive domain of carving stone. These forms morph in the round, where one vantage rarely implies the reality from another point of view, intimating the malleability and unpredictability of perception.
