Sanctuary | Bruce Beasley | San Jose, CA
Three buildings surround Renova Plaza, the new bed building, the existing main hospital building and Valley Specialty Center building. The plaza is approximately 2 acres creating an open space with high visibility from both South Bascom Ave and the surrounding buildings. This site was identified for a monumental artwork.
The artist was commissioned to create a 70’ sculpture based on his Rondo series. The sculpture is comprised of 5 stainless steel rings one 30’ in diameter and the rest 25” in diameter. It is integrated into the landscape with a 1/4 mile walking path that allows the viewer to experience the sculpture from underneath. Though massive in scale, the sculpture has a “lite airy” feeling and does not block the site lines from any vantage point.
Extensive research was done to provide accurate renderings and a model to show how the sculpture would integrate into the surroundings both at installation and 25 years in the future when the landscaping is fully mature.
