Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce a two-person exhibition with Cara Barer and Piero Spadaro.
“Maps and travel influence my art by evoking a sense of exploration and impermanence.”
– Cara Barer
Cara Barer utilized maps and travel books in her latest body of work, reshaping them into organic, topographical sculptures before photographing. To Barer, maps represent movement, memory and change through both their subject matter and the impermanent nature of their paper material. Barer celebrates the contrast between the inevitable decay of her chosen materials and how they end up forever preserved in her photographs.
“The exact meaning may vary based on context.” – Piero Spadaro
Piero Spadaro enlists assorted materials such as glitter, ground pigment, acrylic, textured paper, and resin to create works reminiscent of landscapes with abstract horizons. The horizon lines in Spadaro’s work represent the end of what is known and encourage exploration and discovery. Each viewer may see something different within the layers of resin and make their own determinations.
