Artist Statement
As an artist it is my nature to observe, express, and share my environment; this is the force that drives my need to create. I find inspiration by extracting visual elements from my surroundings. I find them in the simplest architectural forms, repetition in nature, and in the wide range of color and texture that exists in the urban landscape; the perfectly imperfect, in other words.
In my mind’s eye and sometimes through snapshots taken while out and about, I collect this so-called urban clutter and work it into each composition through a layered arrangement of color and texture, punctuated by unexpected moments of design. In my collage work, I achieve this composition via the use of both found and made papers in which I utilize photography, drawing, painting, and screen-printing. In my weavings, the process is simplified in terms of materials (traditional yarns and found remnants), though it is ultimately a parallel process of creating - intuitive and recurrent construction, deconstruction, and recombination of materials and imagery.
In both, I strive for a visible evolution of thought and vision. My goal is to leave the viewer with feelings of familiarity, nostalgia, connection and accessibility.
