July 7 - August 26, 2004

The Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of recent work by Gordon Huether opening Wednesday, July 7, 2004.

Huether’s exhibition is broken down into three areas of investigation: mixed media works; glass & acrylic sculpture; and the “Diary Series.”

The mixed media works are a continuation of Huether’s exploration of manipulated light, nature and salvaged eroded materials. He incorporates glass, resin and light boxes with found materials and emphasizes the markings caused by the inevitable and natural corrosion of these objects. By revealing the inherent beauty of this process he transforms recycled bits of urban grit into the extraordinary.

Huether’s monumental sculptural works also reference nature and its manipulation. In “Stix & Stones III” a group of 8’ long acrylic rods are suspended from the ceiling, echoing the arrangement of a large bundle of sticks. Given it’s considered, even dependent, relationship with the site around it, the sculpture’s presence is significantly informed by its placement. In this and many of Huether’s works, glass & acrylic are used as a weighty, volumetric and powerful material rather than one that is fragile and ornamental.

In each of the “Diary Series,” his most personal work to date, Huether focuses on an object that floats in space and is surrounded by text in a box. The juxtaposition of the objects and narration are meant to inspire contemplation and are simultaneously lucid and mysterious.
